Isey is a 99-year-old bourbon-swilling Maori warrior queen, her face lit up by laugh lines, her joy infectious – and in a week she will be 100 years old. She still drives her 1970s car, always catches the biggest fish and never stops teasing her son James, who cares for her selflessly and lives with her on a farm in Kawakawa, New Zealand. They share a deep spiritual worldview – they are members of Ngāti Manu, the bird people. James organises the festivities to celebrate Isey’s 100th birthday and, as a tohunga (an expert practitioner), even brings the spirit world onboard. Together they experience an incredible week leading up to the big event, which becomes a heartwarming celebration of whānau (family) and aroha (love).

In this intimate doc, director Florian Habicht captures the pair’s devoted bond and their infectious joy.
